California Catholic Medical Association Urges “No” Vote on Proposition 1

The California Catholic Medical Association and its members urge voters to vote NO on Proposition 1. Even those who support abortion rights have stated that Proposition 1 is extreme, expensive and unnecessary.

Medical sciences and embryology unequivocally confirm and support that the unborn baby is a distinct, unreproducible human being from the time of fertilization. Therefore, just as the life of a mother must be protected, so must the life of her unborn baby. Proposition 1 violates the Hippocratic oath which charges all physicians to protect and preserve life before and after birth.

California already has some of the most permissive abortion laws in the country, allowing abortions up to the time of birth. This proposition seems to benefit the abortion industry, particularly Planned Parenthood, which stands to profit with the state committing money to provide more funding for abortions.

The proposition was first put forth by the state legislature. Already the legislature and the governor have allocated $200 million of taxpayers’ dollars to fund and promote abortion, even for residents of other states. The state has established a website that includes statements inviting non-Californians to come to our state for their abortions. It seems to us that this website is essentially a state-sponsored propaganda tool for the abortion industry.

In addition, Proposition 1 does not protect the health and rights of women in unplanned pregnancies. We should be focusing on supporting women with the emotional, psychological, spiritual and material support that they need and want in difficult times. True choice would mean supporting pregnancy help centers that offer real solutions to pregnant women in crisis.

Vote no on government support of the abortion industry. Vote NO on Proposition 1.
